S. Korea cracks down on counterfeit goods

Anchor: Counterfeit products that are nearly indistinguishable from original products are threatening the consumer culture. Amid such trend, the Korean Intellectual Property Office beefed up activities of trademark-specialized police forces. Reporting by Olivia Hur. Reporter: This is the trademark-specialized police team's office at the Seoul bureau of the Korean Intellectual Property Office. Enormous plastic bags filled with counterfeit goods are fully occupying at the corner of the office. Most counterfeit goods replicate overseas luxury bags or clothes and the number is increasing. [Interview - Lee Soo-won, Commissioner / KIPO] As we are able to secure evidences and to take legal measures, we will strengthen crackdowns on counterfeit goods, especially those traded online. We expect that counterfeit products will not be traded any more. The Korean Intellectual Property Office hired ex-police officials in the team to improve the quality of investigations and have adopted eq! uipments to take strong actions for those repeatedly involved in sales or productions of counterfeits. All six investigators have certificates in the use of digital forensic devices so that they can carry out highly sophisticated and precise investigation.
